US Mission in Nigeria to Review Social Media Accounts of Visa Applicants

In a separate development, the United States (US) Mission in Nigeria has announced that all non-immigrant visa applicants must now provide information on their social media accounts from the past five years.

In a statement on Monday, the embassy said applicants are required to list all usernames or handles for platforms they have used during this period. The statement added, “Applicants certify that the information in their visa application is true and correct before they sign and submit.”

The mission has warned that failure to disclose such information could lead to visa denial and future ineligibility. The new requirement applies to a wide range of visa applications, including B-1 for business, B-2 for tourism, F and M for students, and H for temporary workers.

This move is part of the US government’s efforts to strengthen national security and builds on previous measures, such as the directive for international student applicants to make their social media accounts public.
