Owolabi Salis Makes History as First Nigerian in Space

In a groundbreaking achievement, Nigerian lawyer and spiritual thinker Owolabi Salis has become the first Nigerian to journey into space, aboard Blue Origin’s NS-33 mission on June 29. Salis, a seasoned traveler who has visited over 120 countries and extreme locations, described his space experience as “more spiritual than scientific,” deepening his belief in a divine presence beyond religious teachings.

A Spiritual Quest

Salis’s journey to space was motivated by a desire to research spiritualism beyond Earth. He reached out to Blue Origin, expressing his interest, and after paying an estimated $2 million, he underwent intensive training and received U.S. aviation approval. The 10-minute suborbital flight carried six passengers, including Salis, beyond the Kármán line, the internationally recognized boundary of space, reaching a peak altitude of 105.2 kilometers.

Weightlessness and Wonder

During the flight, Salis experienced about three minutes of weightlessness, floating like a bird and mesmerized by the sight of Earth suspended in the vast darkness of space. The view, he said, was a profound revelation that strengthened his spiritual convictions. “From what I saw, the Almighty Lord of the Universe is not the same as what some religious books are telling us,” Salis remarked.

Call for Reforms

Salis’s achievement has sparked widespread pride across Africa, symbolizing the continent’s growing role in space exploration. However, he also used the opportunity to call for political reforms in Nigeria, emphasizing the need for progress and development in his home country.

Future Plans

With his space journey now behind him, Salis plans to explore remote islands, continuing his quest for adventure and discovery. He believes that more Nigerians will soon venture into space, paving the way for a new generation of explorers and pioneers.

Inspiring a Nation

Salis’s achievement serves as an inspiration to Nigerians and Africans everywhere, demonstrating the potential for individuals from diverse backgrounds to excel in various fields. As the first Nigerian in space, Salis has etched his name in history, and his journey will undoubtedly motivate others to pursue their dreams, no matter how ambitious.

Legacy of the NS-33 Mission

The NS-33 mission, which carried Salis and five other passengers into space, marked another milestone in commercial space travel. The successful launch and landing of the New Shepard spacecraft demonstrated the advancements in space technology, making space travel more accessible to individuals from around the world.
