The Super Eagles of Nigeria confirmed the passing of legendary goalkeeper Peter Rufai, fondly known as “Dodomayana,” who died at the age of 62 on Thursday, July 3, 2025, after a brief illness, according to Channels TV.
In an official statement, the Super Eagles announced that the country’s football space is mourning the loss of one of Nigeria’s greatest footballers. Rufai was a towering figure in Nigerian football and a key member of the squad that clinched the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title.
Rufai’s impact extended far beyond that historic victory. He was the first-choice goalkeeper and captain during Nigeria’s debut appearance at the 1994 FIFA World Cup, helping the team reach the Round of 16. Over his illustrious career, Rufai earned 65 caps for the Super Eagles, firmly establishing himself as one of the country’s finest custodians between the posts.
Known for his exceptional penalty-saving ability and leadership, Rufai also made rare contributions to the scoreboard, notably scoring a penalty during the 1994 AFCON qualifiers.
In a statement on their official X account, the Super Eagles said, “We mourn the passing of legendary Super Eagles goalkeeper, Peter Rufai, a giant of Nigerian football and a 1994 AFCON champion. Your legacy lives on between the sticks and beyond. Rest well, Peter Rufai.”
Peter Rufai’s influence on Nigerian football remains profound, his name forever etched among the nation’s greatest sportsmen.
