Socrate Safo Expresses Envy Over NDC’s Empowerment of Creatives

Veteran Ghanaian filmmaker and creative industry advocate, Socrate Safo, has openly confessed his envy towards his colleagues in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) who have been appointed to key positions under the new John Mahama-led administration.

In an interview with Halifax Ansah Addo on Okay FM, Socrate Safo, a known supporter of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), praised the NDC for recognising and honouring talents within the creative sector—something he believes his own party has failed to do.

“Halifax, let me tell you something, I’m jealous of my colleagues in the NDC, I must admit. If I look at the leverage being given to them by the government, I jealous them. Let me confess, I jealous them,” he said frankly during the interview.

Socrate’s comments follow the recent appointment of veteran actress Kalsoume Sinare as Ghana’s Ambassador to Spain, as well as several other creatives—including KOD, Kafui Danku, John Dumelo, Abeiku Santana, and James Gardiner—who have been appointed to various strategic roles in different sectors of the Mahama administration.

When asked why he felt this way, the filmmaker explained that the NDC has shown respect for the intelligence and contributions of people in the creative space—something he believes the NPP has consistently failed to do.

“I think the NDC has respected the mental fortitude of creatives and acknowledged what they can contribute to better the country,” he said.

Safo didn’t hold back in criticizing the NPP, expressing disappointment in how the party, despite being in power for eight years, failed to meaningfully empower or entrust creatives with leadership roles.

According to him, many creatives within the NPP were often overlooked and made to feel unqualified—even though many of them are well-educated, experienced, and capable of contributing to national development.

“The NPP didn’t give us platforms. They looked down on creatives as if we don’t have degrees or we’re not experienced. They should stop thinking that way,” he lamented.
