GAF Deploys Personnel for Standby Support, Says No Soldiers Will Be at Polling Stations

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has announced the deployment of military personnel to strategic locations nationwide to assist the Ghana Police Service (GPS) in ensuring a peaceful and secure environment for the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections.

In a statement released on Friday, December 6, 2024, the GAF assured the public that the presence of military personnel should not cause alarm, as their deployment is part of collaborative efforts to uphold law and order during the electoral period.

The statement clarified that military personnel will not be stationed at polling stations. Instead, their role is limited to providing standby support, with the police maintaining primary responsibility for election security. The military will only step in upon the police’s request, emphasizing a coordinated approach to maintaining peace.

GAF further urged all Ghanaians to exercise their civic rights responsibly and cooperate with security personnel to ensure a smooth electoral process. Citizens were also advised to refrain from any activities that could disrupt the elections.

The announcement reflects ongoing preparations by Ghana’s security agencies to safeguard the integrity of the electoral process and ensure the safety of voters and electoral officials.
