U.S. President Donald Trump has warned that the United States may consider military operations in Nigeria, accusing the Nigerian government of failing to protect Christian communities targeted in a wave of violent attacks.
In a statement posted on Truth Social on Saturday, Trump said he has directed the Defense Department to begin drawing up plans for a potential intervention if the killings persist. He added that all forms of U.S. assistance to Nigeria will be halted with immediate effect until there is “clear action” from the Nigerian government.
“We may very well go into that now disgraced country ‘guns-a-blazing’ to completely wipe out the Islamic terrorists who are committing these horrible atrocities,” Trump wrote, accusing extremist groups of carrying out “systematic” attacks on Christians.
The comments are likely to spark diplomatic friction between Washington and Abuja, as Nigeria has consistently argued that it is addressing widespread insecurity but faces deep-rooted challenges including terrorism, armed banditry and communal clashes.
Tinubu Replies Trump On Alleged Mass Killings Of Christians In Nigeria
Human rights organizations and religious bodies have repeatedly raised concerns over attacks on rural communities in Nigeria, particularly in parts of the Middle Belt and the North. Trump’s statement is expected to increase international pressure on the Nigerian government to intensify counterterrorism and security measures.
