England’s national team breathed a collective sigh of relief as they overcame a sluggish start to romp to a 3-0 win over Latvia in World Cup qualifying on Monday night. Thomas Tuchel’s second game in charge ended in victory, thanks in large part to a stunning free-kick from Reece James and a clinical finish from Harry Kane.
The game got off to a rocky start for England, with Latvia’s Vladislavs Gutkovskis squandering a gilt-edged opportunity to put the visitors ahead inside 18 minutes. A mix-up between Jordan Pickford and Marc Guehi allowed Gutkovskis in on goal, but he somehow fired wide with the open net gaping.
England’s players were left fuming when they were denied a penalty moments later, with Marcus Rashford judged to have gone down too easily under a slide tackle from Roberts Savalnieks. The Three Lions continued to push for the opening goal, with Ezri Konsa’s half-volley from a Declan Rice corner tipped over by Latvia goalkeeper Krisjanis Zviedris.
Another penalty appeal came and went when Zviedris appeared to tumble over Jarrod Bowen after failing to catch a teasing cross from Rashford onto the head of Jude Bellingham. The decision was still cleared even after an extremely lengthy VAR check, leaving England’s players frustrated and Latvia’s bench relieved.
Just before half-time, England finally broke the deadlock through Reece James. The Chelsea right-back took charge of a free-kick some 25 yards from goal, and his effort curled up and over the wall to give the hosts the lead. The goal was a testament to James’ exceptional skill and technique, and it gave England the momentum they needed to go on and win the game.
After the break, Harry Kane went agonisingly close to scoring his 71st goal for England with a curled effort from just inside the box. Kane got exactly that minutes later when he was on hand to tap in a superb ball across the face of goal from Rice. The goal was a classic example of Kane’s clinical finishing, and it gave England a comfortable 2-0 lead.
England’s third goal soon followed when substitute Eberechi Eze danced his way inside from the left and saw a low strike deflect in at the near post. The goal sealed the three points for England and maintained Thomas Tuchel’s winning start as manager.
The win was a welcome relief for England’s players and fans, who had been left frustrated by the team’s slow start. However, the Three Lions’ second-half performance was much improved, and they fully deserved their 3-0 win over Latvia.
As for Latvia, they can take heart from their impressive first-half display, which saw them create several good chances. However, they ultimately paid the price for their profligacy in front of goal, and England’s superior quality told in the end.
The win maintains England’s perfect start to their World Cup qualifying campaign, and they will look to continue their winning streak in their next match. With Thomas Tuchel at the helm, England’s fans will be hoping that their team can go on to achieve great things in the future.
