Stephen Frimpong Manso Appointed Head Coach of Ghana’s U17 Black Starlets

Stephen Frimpong Manso has officially assumed the role of head coach for Ghana’s U17 national football team, the Black Starlets, as of January 1, 2025. His appointment follows Laryea Kingston’s resignation after the team’s underwhelming performance in the WAFU Zone B U17 Cup of Nations, where they fell short of qualifying for the Africa U17 Cup of Nations.

Frimpong Manso brings a wealth of experience to the role, having managed top Ghanaian clubs like Asante Kotoko, Karela United, and Bibiani Gold Stars, as well as stints with Stade d’Abidjan in Ivory Coast and other local teams. Notably, he has a history with the Black Starlets, having served as assistant coach and head coach between 2009 and 2010, and as an assistant coach for the Black Meteors, Ghana’s U23 team, from 2006 to 2008.

A former defender for the Black Stars, Frimpong Manso earned 14 caps between 1986 and 1995, and played for Asante Kotoko before moving to Kuwait’s Al Shabab. His expertise in developing young talent positions him as the ideal leader to guide the Black Starlets back to success.

The Black Starlets, who recently faced challenges, including a 2-1 semi-final loss to Burkina Faso in the 2024 WAFU Zone B Championship, are now looking to regroup under Manso’s leadership. As they prepare for future tournaments and potential qualification matches for 2025, hopes are high for a revival of the team’s fortunes.

Frimpong Manso’s appointment is seen as a step toward rebuilding the Black Starlets’ reputation as a formidable force in African football.
