Senegal’s President To Dissolve Parliament in A Bid To Fight Excessive Public Spending

The President of Senegal, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, is set to dissolve the West African nation’s Parliament and call snap elections.

The move is to help President Faye secure a Parliamentary majority and push through reforms.

On Thursday, September 5, 2024, President, Africa’s youngest Head of State called an extraordinary session of Parliament and dismissed the heads of two key councils after Parliamentarians voted against dissolving the two entities.

According to Mr. Faye, he wants to scrap the entities to root out graft and address excessive public spending, with the plan expected to save Senegal at least 15 billion CFA francs ($25 million) annually.

On Wednesday, Senegalese Prime Minister, Ousmane Sonko, said plans to dissolve the opposition-controlled parliament and initiate a major anti-corruption campaign could affect many.

Sonko, who became prime minister in April this year after running mate Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s presidential victory in March, addressed government staff against the backdrop of a censure motion filed the previous day by supporters of former president Macky Sall.

Sall’s coalition retains a majority in the 2022-elected national assembly. Sonko confidently stated in a social media video that there will be no censure motion until September 12, when he expects significant changes to occur in parliament.
