NIGERIA: UniJos Dental Students Protest Non-Accreditation, Demand Graduation After 10 Years in School

Dozens of dental students at the University of Jos (UniJos) have taken to the streets to protest the non-accreditation of their courses, a failure that has resulted in them spending over ten years in the institution without being able to graduate.

The frustrated students blocked the university gate at its Permanent Site on Wednesday, singing solidarity songs and carrying placards with inscriptions such as “Our future is on hold,” and “Accredit us now.”

Demands and Blame on University Management

Mr. Johnson Titus, President of the Jos University Dental Students Association, spoke on behalf of the protesters, demanding that the university management immediately address their plight and provide a clear solution.

“What you see behind me is the frustration of dental students who have been in the university for the past ten years without graduating. We have been stagnating because of the non-accreditation of our programme,” Titus said.

The students are calling on the management and relevant authorities to urgently provide a date for accreditation and resolve the curriculum problems that are holding back their careers.

University Held Responsible

The student leader firmly placed the blame for their predicament on the university itself, accusing the management of deceit during the admission process.

“The University of Jos did not inform anyone that there is no accreditation for the dental courses, for which they admitted us. If we had known, we probably wouldn’t have applied for the course,” Titus stated.

He stressed that the university is at fault for admitting students into a program that lacked the necessary accreditation, questioning why Dentistry was listed on their website as an option for admission if the necessary approvals were not in place.
