Liberian President Joseph Boakai has taken a bold step in the fight against corruption by suspending over 400 government officials, including ministers, for failing to declare their assets to anti-corruption agencies. This move comes after the officials missed the President’s November 27, 2024 deadline to comply with the assets declaration requirement .
The suspended officials will be off work without pay for a month, or until they submit the required declarations. This includes high-profile officials such as:
– Minister of Commerce and Industry: Magdalene Ellen Dagoneh
– Chairman of the National Oil Company: Gloria Musu Scott
– Liberia Ambassador to the United States: Al Hassan Conteh
– Liberia Ambassador to the United Kingdom: Genevieve Kennedy
– Liberia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations: Lewis Brown
President Boakai’s decision is a significant move in his efforts to tackle corruption, which has plagued Liberia for decades. The country scored 27 points out of 100 on the 2024 Corruption Perceptions Index, indicating a high level of corruption .
By taking action against non-compliant officials, President Boakai is sending a strong message that corruption will not be tolerated in his administration.
