Eight students have been arrested in Kenya over their alleged involvement in a suspected arson attack that killed 16 pupils at a Kenyan girls’ school.
Kenyan police announced the arrests. As earlier reported, the alleged arson attack took place on Thursday morning, May 28, 2026 at the Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil.
The school is about 120km north-west of Nairobi, the capital city of Kenya.
The fire swept through the upper floor of the school’s dormitory which reportedly had 135 bunk beds.
According to the Kenya National Police Service, following interviews with students and staff and a forensic review of CCTV footage, eight students at the school were identified as “persons of interest in connection with the planning and execution” of the deadly fire.
Police indicated that students were detained for questioning after being traced to their homes and brought back to the school.
Others who had remained in the school vicinity were also tracked down and detained, police said.
Police noted that the eight arrested were among 30 students who were initially recalled to the school by detectives in investigating the fire incident.
