Violence has once again rocked the Bawku municipality in Ghana’s Upper East Region, resulting in one fatality and several injuries.
The clashes, which began on Wednesday, were sparked by a long-standing chieftaincy dispute between two factions.
The trouble started when one faction ordered women from the opposing side to leave the market, leading to a confrontation that escalated into violence.
Details of the Violence
– One civilian lost his life, and two others were critically injured in the exchange of gunfire between armed youth and police.
– Incensed youth set fire to the private residence of the Divisional Police Commander, ACP Adamu Seidu, and the Majority Leader in Parliament, Mahama Ayariga.
– The police barracks and a security vehicle were also torched, forcing the Police Service to evacuate personnel.
Background to the Conflict
The Bawku conflict has been ongoing, with communities being attacked, innocent civilians killed, and government officials expressing outrage. Despite promises of justice, the cycle of violence repeats itself. Some Kusasi youth recently slammed President John Dramani Mahama for not fulfilling his promise to address the conflict, vowing to ensure the NDC presidential and parliamentary candidates receive zero votes in the upcoming elections.
Criticism of Government Response
A Bawku group expressed disappointment in President Mahama and the Majority Leader, accusing them of using the conflict to advance their political causes. They also criticized the visit to Bawku by the President and the Majority Leader, alleging that other MPs from the area were excluded. The group’s concerns highlight the deep-seated issues driving the conflict and the need for a more inclusive and effective solution.
