Ghana’s Auditor-General Begins Nationwide Payroll Audit

The Auditor-General of Ghana has initiated a comprehensive nationwide payroll audit targeting all entities on the Controller and Accountant-General’s payroll system, including subvented organizations.

The audit aims to examine payroll records of Ministries, Departments, Agencies (MDAs), and subvented bodies for the period January 1, 2023, to December 31, 2024.

A key component of the exercise is a full headcount of all government-paid staff. The Office of the Auditor-General has urged all affected institutions to grant auditors full and unrestricted access to relevant records.

“The Office of the Auditor-General calls on all institutions to provide unhindered access to books, returns, and other documents, including computerized and electronic records, to ensure the audit is completed smoothly and within schedule,” the statement emphasized.

This audit is expected to ensure transparency and accountability in government payroll operations, potentially uncovering any discrepancies or irregularities in payroll management. By verifying the accuracy of payroll records and identifying any ghost workers or duplicate payments, the audit aims to promote efficient use of government resources.
