The persistent water shortage in Northern and Savannah Regions has reached a boiling point, prompting urgent calls for government intervention. The crisis has affected areas such as Tamale, Yendi, and Damongo, with officials estimating that over $300 million is needed to resolve the issue.

During his first official visit to the Northern Region, Adam Mutawakilu, the new Managing Director of the Ghana Water Company (GWC), confirmed that the government is working to secure funding for the project. “The amount involved is quite huge… but with the determination of the president, it is possible,” he stated [1).

Mutawakilu emphasized the importance of sourcing investment to implement the project before the end of President Mahama’s tenure. In the meantime, he has tasked the Chief Manager of GWC for the Northern Region to implement a water rationing schedule to ensure fair distribution across Tamale and its surrounding areas.

The water crisis in Ghana is not limited to the Northern Region. According to reports, the lack of clean drinking water and sanitation systems is a severe public health concern, contributing to 70% of national diseases ¹. The government has launched initiatives to address the issue, including solar-powered water projects ².
