Ghana: PAG sympathize with Victims of Devastating Floods and Calls for Urgent, Long-Term Flood Prevention Measures

The Progressive Alliance for Ghana (PAG) has extended its deepest condolences to all families who have lost loved ones, homes, businesses, and other valuable property following the devastating floods that affected Accra and several other cities and communities across the country after several hours of heavy rainfall on Monday morning. The floods have claimed lives, displaced families, submerged homes and businesses, and caused extensive damage to public infrastructure while disrupting transportation, livelihoods, and economic activities.

The Progressive Alliance for Ghana stands firmly with all those affected during this difficult and heartbreaking time. We share in your grief and pain, and assure every bereaved family, displaced resident, and victim who has suffered losses that you are not alone. Our thoughts and prayers are with you as the nation mourns this tragic disaster.

This is yet another painful reminder that flooding has become a recurring national tragedy rather than an isolated natural disaster. Year after year, communities across Ghana are forced to endure avoidable suffering due to inadequate drainage systems, poor urban planning, indiscriminate waste disposal, weak enforcement of building regulations, and the unchecked occupation of waterways.

PAG commends the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the Ghana National Fire Service, the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana Armed Forces, health workers, volunteers, and all individuals who have been working tirelessly to rescue victims and provide relief to affected communities.

While emergency response is necessary, PAG believes the country must move beyond reacting to disasters after they occur. We therefore call on the Government of Ghana to urgently implement proactive and sustainable measures to prevent future flooding. These should include:

• Accelerating the construction and rehabilitation of drainage systems across flood-prone communities.

• Intensifying the desilting of gutters and waterways before and throughout the rainy season.

• Strictly enforcing building regulations to prevent developments on waterways and flood-prone lands.

• Strengthening waste management systems and enforcing sanitation laws to prevent drains from being choked with refuse.

• Investing in modern flood forecasting, early warning systems, and public education to improve disaster preparedness.

• Working closely with Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to identify and address flood-prone areas before disasters occur.

The recurring loss of lives and destruction of property cannot continue to be accepted as normal. Every Ghanaian deserves to live in a safe environment where heavy rainfall does not result in tragedy.

PAG urges all citizens to cooperate with emergency authorities, heed public safety directives, avoid flooded roads and waterways, and remain vigilant as weather conditions persist.

Once again, we extend our heartfelt sympathies to all those affected by this disaster. The Progressive Alliance for Ghana stands in solidarity with every victim and remains committed to advocating for policies that will protect lives, property, and the future of our nation.
