Ebrahim Rasool, the South African ambassador expelled from the United States, has arrived home to a raucous welcome in Cape Town.
Rasool and his wife, Rosieda, were greeted by crowds of supporters at Cape Town International Airport, requiring a police escort to navigate the terminal.
Rasool struck a defiant tone, saying, “A declaration of persona non grata is meant to humiliate you… But when you return to crowds like this, and with warmth… like this, then I will wear my persona non grata as a badge of dignity.” He added, “It was not our choice to come home, but we come home with no regrets.”
The expulsion was sparked by comments Rasool made during a webinar, which US Secretary of State Marco Rubio deemed “race-baiting” and anti-American. However, Rasool emphasized that South Africa is not anti-American, saying, “We don’t come here to say we are anti-American… We are not here to call on you to throw away our interests with the United States.”
Rasool’s expulsion is part of a broader diplomatic rift between South Africa and the US. President Trump issued an executive order cutting all funding to South Africa, alleging its government supports Hamas and Iran, and pursues anti-white policies. South Africa has filed a case at the International Court of Justice, accusing Israel of violating its obligations under the Genocide Convention.
