Gospel singer Empress Gifty Adorye has openly addressed the societal stigma surrounding divorce, insisting that it is not a curse but rather a natural phase of life.
The gospel singer who previously divorced Prophet Elisha Osei after over a decade of marriage, is now happily married to Hopeson Adorye, a former member of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
In a candid interview on Channel One TV’s entertainment show Upside Down, co-hosted by Frema Adunyame and Nana Tuffour, Empress Gifty shed light on her personal journey through divorce, offering a fresh perspective on the often-taboo subject.
“It was a tough decision. Always going to church and all of a sudden you have to stop, you have to sit home and you have memories,” she shared. “But I had the right people around me. When you divorce and you don’t have the right people around you, you would lose focus. So my mother and my aunty, Mama G, were there to support me.”

The gospel music diva emphasized that the current societal view of divorce as a curse is misguided. She believes that divorce is simply a transition, stating, “In our world now, when you go into a divorce, it’s like a curse, but you see, it’s a transition of life… It’s something bound to happen.”
During the interview, Empress Gifty also reflected on her role as a mother, explaining that she shares two daughters with her ex-husband. “They were 5 and 3 years old when we divorced, but they are 16 and 14 years now,” she said.
Beyond the emotional struggles, the award-winning gospel artist shared key lessons she has learned from her experience. “I have learned how to forgive. I have learned how not to insult your husband, even when you are right. I have learned how to keep quiet, and I have learned how to pamper a man—because that is all they want,” she concluded, offering a glimpse into her growth and resilience through the years.
