Torrential rains and floods have devastated Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, claiming at least 33 lives, according to officials.
The disaster has left thousands stranded, with many homes swept away and critical infrastructure damaged.
President’s Response
President Félix Tshisekedi has promised support to the victims, stating, “The republic will not abandon you.” He has called a government crisis meeting to address the situation.
Desperate Residents
Residents are trying to flee the floodwaters by wading, swimming, or paddling to safety in homemade canoes. Christophe Bola, a resident of the Ndanu area, described the situation: “The water has reached 1.5 metres high. We have just managed to save ourselves, the rest is trapped in our homes.”
Challenges Ahead
The floods have caused widespread disruptions, including water shortages, road closures, and damage to critical infrastructure. The city’s mayor has deployed search and rescue teams to affected areas, but residents have expressed frustration with the slow response.
Climate Crisis
The Congolese president has warned that the climate crisis is exacerbating flooding in the region. The city’s geography, with its proximity to the Congo River and poor sewage maintenance, makes it vulnerable to such disasters .
