Chris Brown has filed a $500m defamation lawsuit against Warner Bros and the producers of a documentary that featured allegations of sexual assault against him. The US singer claims the documentary, Chris Brown: A History Of Violence, was “full of lies and deception” and that producers were provided with proof that the information was false but still chose to air the programme.

The lawsuit, filed at LA’s superior court, accuses the producers of undermining Brown’s efforts to rebuild his life and damaging the credibility of true survivors of violence. Brown’s lawyers say the allegations made in the documentary have been “discredited over and over” and that Brown has never been found guilty of any sex-related crime.

The singer has publicly acknowledged his “past mistakes” and addressed them in his own documentary, Chris Brown: Welcome To My Life, released in 2017. If Brown is successful in his lawsuit, he intends to donate a portion of the $500m to survivors of sexual abuse.

Warner Bros has released a statement saying they stand behind the production and will “vigorously defend” themselves against the lawsuit. The producers of the documentary have also been contacted for comment.

The lawsuit is the latest development in a long-running controversy surrounding Brown’s past behavior. In 2009, he pleaded guilty to assaulting his then-girlfriend Rihanna. The new lawsuit is a significant escalation of Brown’s efforts to defend his reputation and seek damages for what he claims are false and defamatory allegations.
