A new immigration program announced today by President Joe Biden, is protecting hundreds of thousands of immigrants who are married to US citizens from being deported from the United States of America (USA).

The “Parole in Place” program, announced on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, is specifically giving amnesty to 500,000 spouses of US citizens, which has been described as a path to legal permanent residency for the undocumented immigrants.

The “parole in place” policy applies to undocumented immigrants who have lived in the United States for at least 10 years. The policy is to allow such immigrants to work legally in the US.

Before the announcement of the policy, many of such immigrants were required to leave the US and wait for their applications to be processed abroad before returning, often resulting in a “prolonged, potentially indefinite, period of separation” from their families, according to the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

The DHS which is expected to review applications on a case-by-case basis, noted that qualifying participants would be allowed to live and work in the US for a three-year period while they apply for permanent residency. The review on case-by-case basis will assess potential threat to public safety or national security, says the DHS.
