President John Dramani Mahama has sworn in three newly appointed Justices of the Supreme Court, charging them to uphold integrity, sound judgment, intellectual courage and an unwavering commitment to justice.
The new Justices are Sophia Rosetta Oduokunwa Bernasco-Essa, a former Court of Appeal Judge; Edward Amoako Asante, former President of the ECOWAS Court of Justice; and Anthony Forson Jr., a seasoned private legal practitioner and former President of the Ghana Bar Association.
Their appointment brings the total number of Justices of Ghana’s highest court to 17.
At the swearing-in ceremony, President Mahama stressed that the authority of the judiciary rests on the confidence and trust of the Ghanaian people, urging the new Justices to uphold judicial independence and determine cases fairly, impartially and strictly according to the law.
He noted that judicial independence is not a privilege for judges but a protection for citizens, particularly when cases involve difficult, unpopular or politically sensitive issues.
