France says it wants to play a role in the next phase of talks on Iran’s nuclear program, warning that it will not approve the lifting of United Nations (UN) sanctions unless it is satisfied with the terms of a final deal.
The Foreign Minister of France, Jean-Noel Barrot, made this known on Friday.
He says any final deal between Iran and the US would need Security Council endorsement, saying France, as a permanent member, would have a say over sanctions relief.
Barrot noted that the talks must also address Tehran’s ballistic missile program and support for proxy groups, warning that the nuclear file alone would not ensure regional stability.
He stated that “Our objective is to get major concessions from the Iranian regime, a radical change in posture. And we will have our word to say, because as a member of the UNSC it will be necessarily linked to the resolution of this crisis.”
US and Iranian officials were supposed to meet in Switzerland today to begin peace talks but that couldn’t happen because Iranian officials pulled out over grievances due to Israel’s continous attacks in Lebanon.
