The Ghana Police Service has arrested a 39-year-old man in connection with the murder of a University of Cape Coast (UCC) student, identified as Innocentia Atsufui Avinu.
Innocentia, a Level 200 student of UCC, was reportedly last seen on June 11, 2026, before her disappearance sparked concern among family members, friends, and the university community.
According to a statement from the Ghana Police Service, the suspect, Michael Mensah, was arrested on June 15, 2026, at approximately 7:15 p.m. at the Pedu Lorry Station in Cape Coast. The arrest was carried out by the Inspector-General of Police’s Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team following what police described as sustained intelligence-led operations.
Preliminary investigations indicate that on June 11, 2026, at about 6:48 p.m., Mensah allegedly picked up the deceased from Ayensu Plaza within the University of Cape Coast hostel enclave. Police say the suspect, who claims to be a teacher but also works as a driver, transported Innocentia to Hutchland Beach, where she was last seen.
Authorities have not yet disclosed further details regarding the circumstances leading to the student’s death.
However, police confirmed that investigations are ongoing and assured the public that any significant developments in the case will be communicated in due course.
The tragic incident has sent shockwaves through the University of Cape Coast community, with students and residents expressing grief and calling for justice for the young student.
