Malawi has repatriated dozens of its citizens from South Africa amid ongoing xenophobic attacks against African nationals.

According to authorities in Malawi, at least 150 Malawians have so been repatriated from South Africa.

The Malawians were repatriated by road, authorities said on Monday, June 8, 2026.

The repatriation of the Malawians comes on the back of attacks in South Africa’s Western Cape Province about a week ago which led to the deaths of five Mozambicans.

A statement from Lilongwe says the Malawians were “among a number of foreign nationals” who had “sought refuge in temporary camps” in Mossel Bay.

Aside Malawi, Nigeria, Ghana and Zimbabwe have also repatriated their citizens due to the xenophobic attacks by South Africans who claims African nationals are taking over their jobs.
