Ghana: Three Arrested Over Killing of Chief in Asawase, Police Hunt for Key Suspect

Police in Ghana’s Ashanti Region have arrested three individuals in connection with the killing of a Kusasi chief in Asawase, a case that has drawn concern over rising violent crime in the area.

The suspects—Jamil Usman (also known as Babamu or Guru), Suleman Yasir Arafat (alias Obasanjo), and Ashiadu Sumbeida (known as Eyeshadow)—were picked up during a targeted police operation months after the incident, which occurred in July 2025.

Speaking at a press briefing in Bekwai on March 17, Ashanti South Regional Police Commander Joseph Hammond Nyaaba confirmed the arrests and said preparations are underway to transfer the suspects to the Ghana Police Service Ashanti Regional Command for further investigations.

He revealed that another suspect, identified only as Illiasu (alias Abodam), is still on the run. Police are urging members of the public to come forward with any information that could lead to his capture.

As part of the operation, officers recovered a cache of weapons, including two AK-47 rifles, a pump-action shotgun, two pistols, and dozens of rounds of ammunition. Authorities say the discovery highlights the scale and seriousness of the criminal activity linked to the case.

The police commander noted that the arrests were made possible through coordinated intelligence efforts and support from the public. He also acknowledged the backing of the Inspector-General of Police and praised officers involved for their commitment.

The suspects are expected to face legal proceedings once investigations are completed, while police continue efforts to track down the remaining fugitive and uncover the full circumstances surrounding the chief’s killing.
