Prosecutors in Türkiye are seeking a jail term of up to 2,430 years for former Mayor of Istanbul, Ekrem Imamoglu, who is standing trial in a mass corruption case.

Mr. Imamoglu’s opposition party and rights groups say the corruption trial in which he is set to be a central defendant are politically motivated.

He faces over 140 charges, according to multiple local media reports in Türkiye.

The charges include corruption and running a criminal organization.

Mr. Imamoglu is the leader of Türkiye’s Republican People’s Party (CHP).

He and his party have accused the Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his allies of launching a crackdown over Erdogan’s decline in popularity.

The trial is beginning today, Monday, March 9, 2026.
