Ghana could soon see the establishment of a new football academy through a proposed partnership with Ukraine, following high-level discussions between officials of the two countries.
A Ukrainian delegation led by Ivan Lukachuk, Ukraine’s Ambassador to Ghana, met with Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, on Friday, February 20, 2026, to explore avenues for cooperation in football development.

The delegation included investors and Andrii Zasakha, Chief Executive Officer of Agri Holding in Takoradi and President of a Ukrainian Premier League club. Their visit centered on building a structured partnership aimed at strengthening grassroots football and deepening bilateral ties between Accra and Kyiv.

Focus on Grassroots and Infrastructure
During the meeting, Mr. Adams welcomed the proposal and highlighted the importance of international sports partnerships in promoting growth, resilience, and cultural exchange. He pointed to Ukraine’s rich football history, notably the European successes of FC Dynamo Kyiv, as evidence of the technical expertise Ghana could tap into.

Ghana, widely respected for its football heritage and steady production of talent, has long prioritized youth development. Officials believe that a formal collaboration could enhance coaching standards, introduce modern academy systems, and attract investment into sporting infrastructure.
According to the Sports Ministry, the government remains open to credible partnerships that strengthen community-level football while improving facilities nationwide. The proposed alliance is expected to include technical knowledge transfer, structured training models, and potential infrastructure development.
Ghana FA Signals Readiness
Also present at the discussions was Kurt Okraku, President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA). He outlined ongoing reforms within Ghana’s football structure, including youth league expansion and governance improvements.
Mr. Okraku expressed the GFA’s readiness to align its development agenda with Ukrainian expertise, particularly in academy management, talent identification, and elite player grooming.
While discussions remain at an exploratory stage, both sides expressed optimism about forming a long-term partnership. Officials believe the collaboration could create opportunities for young Ghanaian players, facilitate exchange programs, and strengthen diplomatic relations through sports.
“We look forward to a fruitful collaboration that benefits both nations and promotes the spirit of sportsmanship,” the Sports Minister said at the close of the meeting.
