Man Suffocates in Well While Retrieving Burning Gas Cylinder

A 30-year-old man, Ashahabu Ubale, has died in Gwarzo Local Government Area of Kano State after entering a well in a high-risk attempt to retrieve a burning gas cylinder. The incident, which occurred at Saulawa Quarters, was confirmed by the Kano State Fire Service in a statement released on Monday, February 9, 2026.

The Rescue Attempt

The emergency began on Sunday when a resident, Alhaji Dan Gwarzo, alerted the Gwarzo Fire Service branch to a rescue situation. According to the Fire Service Public Relations Officer, Saminu Abdullahi, Ubale had entered the well to retrieve a gas cylinder that was on fire and had been thrown into the water.

Cause of Death: Gas Displacement and Suffocation

Investigation into the tragedy revealed that while Ubale was inside the well, the gas cylinder opened. The resulting release of gas rapidly displaced the oxygen within the confined space of the well, leading to immediate suffocation.

Fire service personnel successfully extracted Ubale from the well, but he was unconscious. He was later confirmed dead by medical professionals.

Official Response

Following the recovery, the body of the deceased was handed over to PC Muhammad Zakiyyu of the Gwarzo Police Division for further administrative procedures.

The Kano State Fire Service expressed its deep condolences to the family of the victim. The agency also issued a stern warning to the public:

  • Safety Caution: Residents are urged never to enter wells or other confined spaces during emergencies without proper safety equipment and training.
  • Oxygen Depletion: The service highlighted the extreme danger of gas leaks in narrow spaces, which can lead to fatal suffocation in a matter of seconds.
