Ghana: Court Grants Bail to 18 Suspects in Nyanyano Palace Attack, Case Adjourned to March 12

The Kasoa Akweley District Court has granted bail to 18 individuals arrested in connection with the violent attack on the Nyanyano Palace in the Gomoa East District, bringing temporary relief to the accused while police investigations continue.

The suspects, who were arrested following the late-night incident last Sunday, made their second appearance before the court on Friday, February 6, 2026. They are facing charges including causing unlawful damage, disturbing public peace, and engaging in conduct likely to create fear and panic among residents.

During the proceedings, the prosecution amended parts of the original charge sheet and applied for an extension of the suspects’ remand, citing the need for additional time to complete investigations into the palace attack. Prosecutors argued that the complexity of the case required further inquiries before pleas could be taken.

However, the application was strongly opposed by counsel for the accused persons, Emmanuel Sarfo, who insisted that the continued detention of his clients was unjustified. He argued that the prosecution could not rely indefinitely on incomplete investigations to deny the suspects their constitutional right to bail.

Presiding judge Her Worship Ama Adomako-Kwakye agreed with the defence’s position and ruled in favour of bail. The court granted bail to 15 suspects who were initially arraigned earlier in the week, as well as three additional suspects arrested subsequently.

Each of the accused persons was admitted to bail in the sum of GH₵60,000, with one surety required per suspect. As part of the bail conditions, the court ordered all accused persons to report to the Gomoa Nyanyano Police Station twice a week, specifically on Mondays and Thursdays, to assist with ongoing investigations and ensure their availability for trial.

The case has been adjourned to March 12, 2026, when the suspects are expected to reappear before the court.

Speaking to the media after the court session, defence counsel Emmanuel Sarfo welcomed the ruling, stressing that the law protects the liberty of accused persons unless there are compelling reasons to deny bail.

“The prosecution says they are not ready to take pleas because investigations are not complete. But they cannot continuously come to court seeking extensions. Under the law, every accused person is entitled to bail unless there are strong reasons to refuse it,” he stated.

The Nyanyano Palace attack, which triggered public concern and heightened security attention in the area, reportedly involved the destruction of parts of the traditional authority’s property and caused fear among residents. While police have not publicly detailed the full circumstances surrounding the incident, the case has drawn attention due to the cultural and traditional significance of the palace within the Gomoa Nyanyano community.

Traditional palaces in Ghana often serve not only as residences for chiefs but also as administrative and cultural centres, making attacks on them particularly sensitive. Community leaders have since called for calm and urged residents to allow the legal process to take its course.

Meanwhile, police investigators are expected to continue gathering statements and evidence ahead of the next court date. Authorities have not ruled out the possibility of additional arrests should further suspects be identified in connection with the disturbances.

As the case progresses, legal observers note that the court’s decision reinforces the principle that pretrial detention must be balanced against the rights of accused persons, even in cases involving public disorder and property damage.
