NIGERIA: EFCC Arraigns Victor Thompson Over Alleged $525,276 Fraud Against American Investors

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has officially arraigned Victor Thompson before Justice Maureen Adaobi of the Federal High Court in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. Thompson faces eight counts of fraud for allegedly swindling several American citizens out of more than half a million dollars under the guise of high-yield investment opportunities.

The Mineral and Maritime Scheme

According to a statement released on Monday by EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale, Thompson allegedly defrauded his victims—identified as Tammy Jensen, Kenneth Blad, Peter Jensen, and others—of a total sum of $525,276.

The prosecution alleges that Thompson lured the investors with promises of lucrative returns from investments in:

  • Mineral resources mining
  • Deep-sea port business

One specific charge highlights that between April and December 2024, Thompson fraudulently obtained $213,350 from the group under these false pretenses, violating Section 1 (1) (b) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Related Offences Act, 2006.

Court Proceedings and Plea

During the hearing, the charges were read to the defendant, who entered a plea of “not guilty” to all counts.

Following the plea:

  • Prosecution: Counsel Joshua Abolarin requested a trial date and asked the court to remand the defendant in a correctional facility pending the outcome of the case.
  • Defense: Counsel Savn Daniel made an oral application for bail. However, the prosecution strongly objected to the oral request.

Remand and Trial Date

After listening to both sides, Justice Maureen Adaobi adjourned the matter to March 19, 2026, for the determination of the bail application and the formal commencement of the trial.

In the interim, the judge ordered that Thompson be remanded at the EFCC’s detention facility in Uyo rather than a correctional center.

Case Summary:

  • Defendant: Victor Ekpeyong Thompson
  • Alleged Total Fraud: $525,276
  • Victims: American “joint unsuspecting investors” (Tammy Jensen, Peter Jensen, Kenneth Blad, etc.)
  • Current Status: Remanded in EFCC custody.
  • Next Court Date: March 19, 2026.
