Police have launched an investigation after a suspected arms trafficker abandoned a cache of weapons and ammunition and fled upon realising he was being monitored by law enforcement officers.
According to police sources, the incident occurred on January 27, 2026, following actionable intelligence that an unidentified individual was transporting illegal arms and ammunition through parts of the city. The suspect was reportedly moving from the Obetsebi Lamptey Interchange in the direction of the Agbogbloshie Bus Terminal, with Kpandai believed to be the intended final destination.
Acting on the intelligence, police operatives deployed a surveillance team to discreetly track the suspect, who was riding a blue Royal motorcycle. Officers said the operation progressed smoothly until the suspect became suspicious of the trailing security presence.
Upon detecting the surveillance, the suspect reportedly abandoned several parcels wrapped in black nylon bags and fled the area at high speed, evading arrest. A coordinated search was immediately carried out in and around the location, but the suspect managed to escape.
A subsequent search of the discarded packages led to the recovery of multiple firearms and ammunition. Police confirmed that the items included one A-Tac semi-automatic shotgun, two Jojef semi-automatic shotguns, and two boxes of cartridges containing a total of 500 BB cartridges.
Authorities described the seizure as a significant interception that potentially prevented the circulation of illegal weapons and reduced the risk of violent crime. The police noted that the nature and quantity of the firearms suggest possible links to organised arms trafficking networks.
Investigations are currently ongoing to identify and apprehend the suspect, as well as to trace the source of the weapons and establish their intended use and final recipients. Police say they are also reviewing intelligence reports and surveillance data to determine whether other individuals or groups may be connected to the operation.
The police have reiterated their commitment to combating the illegal circulation of firearms and urged members of the public to provide credible information that could assist ongoing investigations. They also encouraged citizens to report suspicious movements or activities involving weapons, assuring the public of confidentiality and prompt action.
