The Chinese Football Association (CFA) has announced severe sanctions against several football clubs following a massive investigation into match-fixing, gambling, and systemic corruption. Nine teams are set to begin the upcoming Chinese Super League (CSL) season with negative points as a result of these findings.
Major Deductions for League Giants
Shanghai Shenhua, who finished as runners-up last season, have been hit with one of the most severe penalties. Alongside Tianjin Tigers, the club will start the new campaign with a 10-point deduction.
In total, 13 teams across China’s football pyramid were involved in the probe. While nine will face deductions in the top flight, four other punished sides have already been relegated to China League One.
Financial Penalties and Fines
In addition to the sporting sanctions, the clubs have been ordered to pay significant fines ranging from £21,000 to £104,000 (approximately 200,000 to one million yuan).
The CFA clarified that these penalties were determined based on:
- The volume of improper transactions.
- The nature and seriousness of the offences.
- The social impact of the club’s involvement in gambling or manipulation.
“Purifying” Chinese Football
A statement from the CFA emphasized that these measures are part of an ongoing effort to “purify the football environment” and maintain the integrity of fair competition. The association reiterated its “zero-tolerance” policy toward corruption, signaling that these punishments serve as a warning to uphold industry discipline.
Key Sanctions Summary:
- Top-Tier Deductions: 9 teams starting on minus points.
- Heavy Hitters: Shanghai Shenhua and Tianjin Tigers (-10 points each).
- Financials: Fines up to £104,000.
- Scope: 13 teams total across the CSL and League One.
