Woman Sentenced for Cutting Off Husband’s Penis in Revenge Attack

A 58-year-old South Korean woman has been sentenced to seven years in prison after she attacked her husband in a violent, premeditated assault, severing his penis and causing severe physical and psychological trauma. The shocking incident took place in August 2024 at a cafe in Hwado-myeon, Ganghwa Island, and has drawn widespread attention due to its extreme nature.

Court documents revealed that the woman, identified only as A, orchestrated the attack after suspecting her 50-year-old husband of infidelity. According to testimonies, the husband had been drinking alone at the cafe and had fallen asleep when the assault occurred.

A’s son-in-law, a 40-year-old man identified as B, reportedly assisted in restraining the victim. He allegedly entered the cafe, bound the man with ropes and industrial tape, and held him in place while A carried out the brutal attack. The woman stabbed her husband approximately 50 times before using a sharp weapon to sever his penis. She then flushed the severed organ down the cafe toilet, eliminating the possibility of surgical reattachment, according to the court.

Emergency responders later found the man and rushed him to a nearby hospital, where he underwent surgery. Medical reports indicate that while he survived the attack, he continues to experience lasting physical and psychological effects, including severe trauma and the permanent loss of genital function.

Remarkably, despite the extreme violence of the assault, the victim reached a settlement with his wife and requested leniency during her trial. The Incheon District Court took his appeal into account when sentencing, handing down a seven-year prison term for A. Her son-in-law, who participated in restraining the victim, was sentenced to four years in prison.

Investigations revealed that the attack had been planned in advance. Authorities said A had enlisted her daughter to monitor the husband’s movements, hiring an unlicensed private investigator to track him via GPS. The daughter was later fined approximately £1,514 (KRW 3 million) for her role in the illegal surveillance.

Police reports suggest that the incident stemmed from escalating domestic tensions, compounded by suspicions of infidelity. Prosecutors argued that the attack’s extreme nature, including premeditation and involvement of family members, made it one of the most severe cases of domestic violence in the region in recent years.

Experts have highlighted that while the act of severing a spouse’s genitalia is rare, such cases often involve premeditation and deep-seated emotional triggers, including jealousy and perceived betrayal. Psychologists note that both victims and perpetrators of extreme domestic violence can face long-term mental health challenges.

The case has sparked debate in South Korea about domestic violence, familial complicity, and the legal handling of extraordinary acts of revenge. Legal analysts noted that while the court appeared to balance the severity of the crime with the victim’s request for leniency, many observers questioned whether the sentences adequately reflect the gravity of the assault.

A separate but unrelated medical incident was reported in France, where 65-year-old Belgian-Israeli Ehdu Arye Laniado suffered a heart attack during a rare medical procedure at the Saint-Hondre-Ponthieu clinic in Paris, highlighting how unusual and dangerous medical and personal crises continue to make headlines globally.

In summary, the Incheon District Court’s sentencing of A and her son-in-law underscores both the brutality of the attack and the complex dynamics of family involvement in domestic violence cases. While the victim’s appeal for leniency affected the outcome, the case remains a stark reminder of the extreme consequences of jealousy and revenge in intimate relationships.
