Grammy-winning Nigerian artist Burna Boy experienced a short delay at a Moroccan airport after arriving for an Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON)–related performance, following a routine customs check involving his jewellery.
The incident was confirmed by Confederation of African Football (CAF) President Patrice Motsepe, who addressed the matter during a press briefing. According to Motsepe, customs officials temporarily stopped the singer after observing his high-value gold jewellery, a move that required clarification before he could proceed.
Motsepe said he was contacted to help resolve the situation and intervened to ensure it was handled quickly and professionally. He emphasized that the matter was settled amicably and did not escalate into any legal or security issue.
“I was called to intervene after Burna Boy was briefly stopped by customs because of his heavy and beautiful gold jewellery. The issue was resolved,” Motsepe explained.
No Impact on Performance
Despite the brief delay, Burna Boy went on to perform as scheduled on January 16, headlining the TotalEnergies AFCON Fan Zone concert in Rabat. The event was part of CAF’s fan engagement activities held alongside the tournament, aimed at celebrating African football and music.
The concert also featured performances by Ghanaian reggae-dancehall star Stonebwoy, as well as popular Moroccan artists Stormy and Jaylann, drawing a large crowd of fans.
The episode did not affect the artist’s participation in AFCON-related events and was described by CAF officials as a minor logistical matter rather than a disciplinary or legal concern.
