The Hospitals Management Board of Nigeria’s Kano State has suspended three doctors who forgot a scissor in the stomach of one Aishatu Umar, a mother of five, leading to her death.
Aishatu died on January 11, 2026. She had reportedly gone to the hospital for a medical procedure in September 2025.
However, following the procedure, she reportedly became uncomfortable and after a series of tests and scans, it emerged that a pair of scissors were in stomach.
The late Aishatu’s brother first reported the incident on social media.
In a statement, the Kano State Hospitals Management Board said a preliminary investigation ordered by the Executive Secretary of the Board, Dr. Mansur Mudi Nagoda, confirmed that surgical scissors were left inside Aishatu’s body after a procedure.
Following the investigation, the Board announced the immediate suspension of the three doctors involved in the case from clinical duties.
The Board has since referred the case to the Kano State Medical Ethics Committee for further investigation and disciplinary measures in line with professional standards and law.
According to the statement, “The Board extends its deepest condolences to the family of the late Aishatu Umar and sympathizes with them over this painful loss. We reassure the public that negligence will not be condoned in any form.”
