Tragic New Year Crash on Assin–Kumasi Highway Leaves 2 Church Members of Adom kyei-Duah Dead and 21 Injured

At least two people were killed and 21 others injured on the night of January 1, 2025, after a bus conveying church members was involved in a serious road traffic accident along the Assin Fosu–Kumasi highway in the Central Region.

Preliminary reports indicate that the crash occurred around 9:00 p.m. at Assin Dansame, as the bus was returning from a 31st Night crossover service in Kumasi. The vehicle was transporting members of the Believers Worship Centre, also known as Second Chance Church, back to Assin Fosu and Breman Asikuma.

The bus, which bore Methodist Wesley Church signage, reportedly ran into a group of people taking part in a street parade, resulting in multiple casualties.

Casualties
• Two fatalities were recorded at the scene
• 21 people sustained injuries, ranging from minor to severe

One of the deceased was identified as Maame Yaa, a 21-year-old apprentice and a student of Sunyani Technical University. The identity of the second victim was not immediately disclosed. Both reportedly died on the spot.

The injured were rushed to various health facilities across the region for treatment, with some receiving emergency care due to the severity of their injuries.

Following the crash, anger flared among some residents, particularly the youth in the area. In the ensuing chaos, the bus involved in the accident was vandalised and completely destroyed.

Police officers were quickly deployed to the scene to restore calm and prevent further violence.

Police Response and Investigation

The Central North Regional Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) confirmed the incident. Speaking on the matter, the Regional MTTD Commander, ASP Wonder Lumor, said police have opened investigations to establish the exact cause of the crash.

He added that factors such as driver conduct, vehicle condition, road safety compliance, and crowd control during street celebrations would form part of the investigation.

Renewed Safety Concerns

The incident has once again raised concerns about road safety during festive periods, particularly the risks associated with late-night travel, overcrowded highways, and unregulated street activities.

Authorities have urged the public to exercise caution during celebrations and called on organisers of street parades and religious events to coordinate with security agencies to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
