Football icon Cristiano Ronaldo has reiterated his determination to reach the historic milestone of 1,000 career goals, while simultaneously hinting that a return to European football may not be entirely off the table.
The 40-year-old superstar brought his official career tally to 956 goals following a clinical brace in Al-Nassr’s 3-0 victory over Al Akhdoud on Saturday afternoon.
‘Passion is High’
Speaking at an awards ceremony in Dubai on Sunday, the former Real Madrid and Manchester United forward provided fresh insight into his longevity and future plans. Despite having previously admitted that the 2026 World Cup would likely be his final international tournament, Ronaldo made it clear he is not ready to hang up his boots yet.
“My passion is high and I want to continue. It doesn’t matter where I play, whether in the Middle East or Europe,” Ronaldo stated. “I always enjoy playing football and I want to keep going. I will reach the number [1,000 goals] for sure, if no injuries.”
Record-Breaking Consistency
Ronaldo’s double for Al-Nassr on Saturday also marked his 40th goal of the 2025 calendar year. This achievement underscores a level of consistency rarely seen in the history of the sport:
- 14 Years of Dominance: Ronaldo has now scored more than 40 goals in 14 different calendar years throughout his career.
- Career Peak: His most prolific year remains 2013, during which he found the back of the net 63 times for both club and country.
Future Outlook
Currently leading the line for Al-Nassr in the Saudi Pro League, the Portuguese captain remains the focal point of his national team as they prepare for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. While his contract and current location have seen him become the face of Middle Eastern football, his latest comments suggest that the “final chapter” of his career could still feature a dramatic return to the European stage.
As he approaches the 1,000-goal mark, every match becomes a countdown to a milestone that many thought was impossible in the modern era.
