Ghana: Dormaahene Praises Mahama’s Governance, Cites Economic Stability Despite Political Differences

The Dormaahene, Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Dr. Agyemang Badu II, has spoken positively about the performance of President John Dramani Mahama’s administration, saying Ghana is currently on the right path under his leadership.

In a video that has gained traction on social media and was cited by Citi News on Sunday, December 28, the traditional ruler made it clear that his comments were not driven by partisan loyalty. He stressed that although he has personal reasons for not aligning with the National Democratic Congress (NDC), he believes the direction of governance under President Mahama has been commendable.

Non-Partisan Assessment
“I will never support the NDC, and I am not affiliated with them,” the Dormaahene stated in the video. “I have been an NPP member before. But anyone who says the country is not being governed in the right direction under President Mahama is not being truthful.”

His remarks have drawn attention because of their non-partisan nature, coming from a traditional leader known for his outspoken views on national issues.

Economic Indicators Highlighted
The Dormaahene pointed to recent economic indicators as evidence of progress, noting that the cedi-to-dollar exchange rate stood at GH¢11.49, which he described as a sign of relative stability in the foreign exchange market since the current administration took office.

Government Actions Noted
He also referenced policy actions taken within President Mahama’s first 11 months in office, including the directive for the Ministry of Finance to release GH¢1 billion to contractors owed by the state since 2017. According to him, the move has helped address long-standing arrears and inject liquidity into the economy.

Broader Reaction
The comments have sparked discussion across political and civic circles, with some observers welcoming the emphasis on policy outcomes over party allegiance. Others have called for sustained reforms to consolidate the gains cited.

President Mahama’s administration has not officially responded to the Dormaahene’s remarks, but government officials have consistently maintained that ongoing economic and fiscal measures are aimed at stabilising the economy and restoring public confidence.
