GHANA: President Mahama Directs Release of GH¢1 Billion to Settle Contractor Arrears Since 2017

President John Dramani Mahama has officially directed the Ministry of Finance to release GH¢1 billion to settle outstanding debts owed to contractors who have worked for the state since 2017.

The President announced the directive on Sunday, December 21, 2025, during a sod-cutting ceremony for the Sunyani–Atronie–Acherensua Road Project in the Bono Region. He emphasized that the payments must be processed and delivered before Christmas to provide financial relief to the affected firms and their families.

Clearing Long-Standing Arrears

Speaking at the event held under the government’s “Big Push” programme, President Mahama clarified that the funds are intended to resolve certified works that have remained unpaid for years, including projects executed under the previous administration.

“I have directed the Finance Minister, Dr. Ato Forson, to release GH¢1 billion to settle debts owed to contractors since 2017 before Christmas. All the contractors will be paid, and the deceased families should follow to receive the money,” the President stated.

He further noted that while audits are still ongoing, the government is committed to honoring its obligations for all verified and certified work.

Call for Prompt Documentation and Quality

The President urged contractors to ensure their documentation is in order to avoid further delays in the payment process.

“I want to urge contractors to hurry up with their certificates to receive your money. Your money will only be delayed if you are lazy,” he cautioned.

During the ceremony, the Dormaahene, Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Dr. Nana Freduah Agyemang Badu II, welcomed the new road project but stressed the importance of rigorous oversight to ensure the state receives value for money. He pleaded with the contractors to desist from shoddy construction work that often leads to the rapid deterioration of new roads.

The Big Push for Infrastructure

The Sunyani–Atronie–Acherensua Road Project is a key component of the administration’s infrastructure agenda. The President described the road as a vital investment for the Bono Region, reaffirming that the “Big Push” programme is designed to revive and complete abandoned or stalled projects nationwide.

This GH¢1 billion allocation is seen as a strategic step to restore confidence in the Ghanaian construction sector and accelerate the delivery of essential public infrastructure across the country.
