A 23-year-old hotel worker, Victoria Emmanuel, is receiving treatment for severe burns after she was allegedly attacked with boiling water by her colleague’s girlfriend in Kawo, Kano State.
The tragic incident occurred on November 10, after Victoria accompanied her colleague, 28-year-old Shadrach Michael, to his residence to pick up items for her upcoming birthday celebration.
Details of the Attack
According to Victoria’s sister, Rosemary Emmanuel, the trouble began when Shadrach’s girlfriend, Chioma Michael, called to say she was visiting. Despite Shadrach discouraging her from coming, Chioma allegedly arrived minutes later and met Victoria in the apartment.
Rosemary narrated that Chioma claimed she wanted to take a warm bath and began boiling water. After the gas finished, she borrowed more from a neighbor and continued heating it.
Moments later, she allegedly carried the pot and poured its contents on Victoria, burning her face, back, chest, and hands.
Rosemary further claimed that Victoria was then locked inside the apartment for nearly five hours—from about 3:00 p.m. to nearly 8:00 p.m.—without medical attention.
Investigation and Remand
Shadrach Michael reportedly hit Chioma in shock as she fled the scene, allegedly taking Victoria’s phone with her. The family later received a call from Victoria, who had been taken to Abdullahi Wase Teaching Hospital. She was subsequently transferred to a clinic in Nomansland due to the unavailability of a doctor.
The matter was reported to the Hotoro Police Division around midnight. Police arrested Chioma’s mother to compel the suspect to appear, and Chioma later turned herself in. The case has since been transferred to the Bompai Police Headquarters for further investigation.
A Magistrate Court sitting in Kawaji, Dakata, on Monday ordered Chioma Michael’s remand at the Goron Dutse Correctional Centre until December 9.
Rosemary dismissed rumors of a relationship between Victoria and Shadrach, insisting they were only co-workers. Victoria is still receiving treatment and is said to be responding well.
