The heads of the African Union Election Observation Mission (AUEOM), the ECOWAS Election Observation Mission (EOM) and the West African Elders Forum have described the coup d’etat in Guinea-Bissau as “regrettable”, expressing “deep concern” over the development and calling for an urgent return to democratic rule.
In a joint statement released on Wednesday, November 26, 2025 following the announcement by the soldiers that they have taken “total control” of Guinea-Bissau, the AUEOM, EOM and the West African Elders Forum deplored what they termed as the “blatant attempt to disrupt the democratic process and the gains that have been achieved thus far.”
The statement added that “We request the African Union and the ECOWAS to take the necessary steps to restore constitutional order.”
According to the statement, “We express concern of the arrests of top officials including those that are in charge of the electoral process. In this regard, we urge the armed forces to immediately release the detained officials to allow the country’s electoral process to proceed to its conclusion.”
