Nigeria: Zamfara APC Leader Umar Moriki Shot Dead in Highway Bandit Attack

A senior member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Zamfara State, Umar Moriki, has been shot dead by suspected bandits in yet another deadly attack along the Gusau–Tsafe highway. The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday near Fegi village in Tsafe Local Government Area, a route increasingly notorious for violent ambushes.

According to party officials, Moriki was travelling from Gusau to Kaduna shortly after attending a stakeholders’ meeting convened by the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle. The state APC described his death as a painful blow to the party, noting that he had been actively contributing to political consultations prior to the attack.

Moriki, aged 62, had a long history of political service in Zamfara. He previously served as Vice Chairman of Zurmi Local Government Area, Director-General of a state agency, and Special Adviser on Rural Electrification. In 2023, he contested the Zurmi/Shinkafi Federal Constituency seat, further cementing his role as a prominent political figure.

The APC Publicity Secretary in the state, Yusuf Idris, highlighted Moriki’s dedication to community development and humanitarian initiatives, describing him as a steadfast party loyalist whose absence will be deeply felt.

He is survived by three wives and several children. Security operatives have not yet issued an official statement on the incident, but commuters report that bandit attacks continue to plague the highway despite ongoing security operations in the region.

Authorities are expected to intensify investigations as pressure mounts on the government to address the rising insecurity affecting rural communities and major roadways across Zamfara State.
