Police in Zimbabwe are searching nationwide for a man accused of murdering his friend during a drinking session in Tsholotsho, following what investigators say began as a minor misunderstanding over a spilled beer.
Authorities identify the suspect as 33-year-old Mehluli Moyo, who was reportedly drinking with 22-year-old Luckmore Nhliziyo when the fatal altercation began. According to eyewitness accounts, Nhliziyo accidentally knocked over Moyo’s beer, sparking a heated argument. Police say the confrontation escalated rapidly, and the disagreement turned violent within minutes.
National Police spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, confirmed that Moyo allegedly drew an okapi knife and stabbed his friend multiple times in a sudden and brutal attack. Nhliziyo collapsed and died shortly after the stabbing. The incident has left Tsholotsho residents alarmed, particularly because it stemmed from such a minor dispute.
After the attack, Moyo is said to have fled the scene. Police have now launched a wide-reaching manhunt and are appealing for the public’s help. Members of the public with information are being urged to report to the nearest police station or contact national emergency lines. Authorities have also increased patrols in nearby communities and are monitoring possible escape routes, including informal crossing points near the Botswana border.
The tragic killing has sparked renewed warnings from law enforcement about alcohol-related violence in the region, with police urging communities to exercise restraint and report escalating disputes before they turn deadly.
Meanwhile, the family of the 22-year-old victim is calling for justice as they prepare for burial arrangements. The incident has prompted community leaders to call for stronger public awareness around conflict resolution and the dangers of carrying offensive weapons during social gatherings.
