Woman critically injured after shocking bus stop stabbing; detectives probe motive as man arrested

A woman in her 30s is in a critical condition after being stabbed in the neck during what police believe was a sudden and unprovoked knife attack in Birmingham city centre,UK.

Emergency services were called to Smallbrook Queensway — just moments from the busy Birmingham New Street railway station — shortly after 9pm on Tuesday night. The woman was found with a serious neck wound and was immediately taken to hospital for emergency treatment. Police say she remains in a life-threatening condition.

A man in his 20s was detained nearby within minutes of the incident and is currently in custody on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm. Officers say there is no immediate indication that the victim knew the attacker.

Several witnesses reported seeing a man run directly at the woman while she stood waiting for a bus and strike her once with a weapon before fleeing. Buses were diverted and part of the street was sealed off by forensic teams overnight. A blue forensic tent was erected at the scene, and officers also examined CCTV from nearby transport and businesses.

West Midlands Police have increased patrols in the area and are appealing for anyone with mobile phone footage or who saw the incident to come forward. They are also working to establish what may have triggered the attack.

Detective Inspector James Nix said:
“We believe this was a completely unprovoked assault on a woman simply waiting for public transport. Our priority is to understand why this happened and ensure we have every piece of evidence to support the investigation.”

Anyone with information is urged to contact West Midlands Police or provide details anonymously through Crimestoppers.
