Yemi Alade Reveals She Battled Brief Smoking Addiction in University

Afropop sensation Yemi Alade has opened up about a difficult period in her past, revealing that she slipped into a brief smoking addiction during her university years.

Speaking candidly in a conversation with Chude Jideonwo, Alade explained that what began as teenage experimentation quickly evolved into a nightly routine.

The Decision to Quit

Alade highlighted two major factors that contributed to her decision to quit: the inconvenience of concealing the habit in public and the direct detrimental effects on her vocal health, a crucial aspect of her professional music career.

She recounted the period where she was getting increasingly dependent on the habit:

“When I was in the university I tried smoking. I did not work out. But before it did not work out, it worked out a bit too much. I started needing to smoke before I go to bed. I was getting addicted to that lifestyle. But also, in public, I would hide the cigarette.”

Alade said the hypocrisy and the emotional toll quickly made her realize the lifestyle was unsustainable:

“So, I was like, ‘What’s this life; the discomfort that I can’t go to bed without smoking and then when I go out, I am going to hide the cigarette? As a teenager in the university trying to figure out life, I also made certain decisions for myself that if I’m going to hide to do something, I will not do it.”

Ultimately, the choice to prioritize her craft and authenticity led her to stop the habit completely: “And they harmed me, they affected my voice anyways. So I stopped. Smoking for me did not last up to a year,” she confessed.

Her honesty sheds light on the mental and emotional struggles faced by public figures and reinforces her self-declared value of awareness in her decisions.
