Bellingham Faces Possible Sanction After Repeating Controversial Gesture in El Clásico Victory

Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham may face disciplinary action after making an explicit gesture during celebrations following his team’s 2–1 win over Barcelona in Sunday’s heated El Clásico.

Bellingham, who provided an assist for Kylian Mbappé’s opener and later scored the winner after Fermin López equalised, was seen gesturing toward his crotch and sticking out his tongue during the post-match celebrations.

The move mirrors a gesture that earned him a €30,000 (£25,400) fine and a suspended one-match ban from UEFA during Euro 2024, after he scored for England against Slovakia in the Round of 16. That punishment expired earlier this year.

At the time, Bellingham defended his actions as an “inside joke” directed at friends in the stands, insisting he meant no disrespect to the opposing team.

While UEFA’s previous sanction no longer applies, it remains unclear whether LaLiga or the Spanish Football Federation will take disciplinary action over the recent incident.

Similar gestures have gone unpunished in the past — notably when Gareth Bale made the “corte de mangas” sign toward Atlético Madrid fans in 2019 — which could mean Bellingham escapes a ban.

The episode capped a tense encounter that saw late drama, including Pedri’s red card for a reckless challenge on Aurélien Tchouaméni, and confrontations between players after the final whistle, with Dani Carvajal clashing with Lamine Yamal amid rising tempers.
