The Rivers State Government has intervened in a case where a hospital allegedly detained a baby boy and his grandmother for one year over unpaid medical bills.
The situation came to public attention after a Nigerian man, Emeka Amaefula, shared a letter signed by Dr. Tari Bozimo appealing for help for the affected family.
According to the letter, the baby’s mother had been admitted to the hospital to deliver her child but tragically died during childbirth. The pre-term baby was placed in an incubator and received medical care.
Upon discharge, the hospital reportedly issued a bill of ₦6 million, of which the family managed to pay ₦1.4 million. Their inability to settle the remaining balance allegedly led to the detention of the baby and his grandmother at the hospital for the past year.

Reacting to the report on X (formerly Twitter), Rivers State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Adaeze Oreh, confirmed that the ministry had reached out to the hospital and assured the public that updates would be provided as the situation develops.
