Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters Refutes Alleged Coup Plot, Denies Link to Independence Anniversary Cancellation

Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has dismissed as false and misleading reports claiming that the cancellation of activities marking the country’s 65th Independence Anniversary was due to an attempted coup plot.

In a statement issued on Saturday in Abuja, the Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, urged the public to disregard the “baseless claims” being circulated by what he described as purveyors of falsehoods and enemies of the nation.

“The attention of the Defence Headquarters has been drawn to a false and misleading report by an online publication insinuating that the cancellation of activities marking Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary was linked to an alleged attempted military coup,” the statement read.

Brig. Gen. Gusau clarified that the decision to cancel the parade was informed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s scheduled attendance at a strategic bilateral meeting abroad and the need for the Armed Forces to maintain focus on ongoing operations against terrorism, insurgency, and banditry.

He also addressed references in the report to the recent arrest of 16 officers, explaining that the investigation is a routine internal process aimed at upholding discipline and professionalism within the military.

According to the statement, an investigative panel has been constituted, and its findings will be made public in due course.

The DHQ reaffirmed the unwavering loyalty of the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) to the Constitution and the Federal Government, urging citizens to support the nation’s security agencies.

“The Armed Forces of Nigeria remains firmly loyal to the Constitution and the Federal Government under the leadership of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” the statement emphasized.
