The Adamawa State Agency for the Control of AIDS (ADSACA) has reported a disturbing trend of rising infections, confirming 8,850 new HIV cases in the state between 2022 and 2025.
Abdullahi Adamu, Director of Research, Monitoring, and Evaluation at the agency, disclosed the figures on Thursday in Yola during a media interactive session aimed at boosting public awareness and encouraging behavioral change in HIV prevention.
Steady Rise in Infections
Mr. Adamu noted that surveillance data shows a steady rise in new HIV infections across the state over the last three years, stressing the need for a review of existing strategies to curb the spread.
The breakdown of new infections reported by ADSACA is as follows:
- 2022: Over 2,700 new infections
- 2023: More than 2,500 new infections
- 2024: 2,227 new infections
- January to June 2025: 1,423 new infections
The Director expressed deep concern over this rising trend despite the availability of effective preventive measures.
Call to Re-strategize
Mr. Adamu emphasized that the state must re-strategize and adopt new approaches that will deepen public awareness and promote preventive practices, stating that current methods are not being used effectively.
“We have preventive options such as abstinence, consistent condom use, and Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP), but many people are not using them effectively,” he said.
The interactive session highlighted the urgency for ADSACA to strengthen collaboration with the media to ensure that public health messages are reaching communities across Adamawa State.
